SWETT, J. E., EARL ELDRED, AND J. S. BUCHWALD. Somatotopic cord-to-muscle relations in efferent innervation of cat gastrocnemius. Am. J. Physiol. 2 19(3) : 762-766. 1970.-Motor innervation to the medial gastrocnemius muscle (MG) was examined in cats by stimulating natural rootlets and teased filaments of the ventral roots, and observing the location of contraction areas on the exposed muscle surface. The limb was denervated, except for the MG muscle. Stimulation of rootlets in strict caudocranial sequence revealed an overlapping progression in the zones of contraction, which commenced at the medial boundary of the muscle and shifted across to the hilar margin. Some rootlets in the intermediate portions of the total distribution gave rise to contractions involving the whole surface of the muscle. It was concluded that more distinct somatotopic organization existed within motor outflow to the MG than has been demonstrated in the sensory inflow. Comparisons of efferent and afferent connections to the muscle and other muscles of the triceps complex were made.

Crossed segmental inhibition in muscles.
Muscle spindles are critically involved in the reflex regulation of the dynamic and static actions of muscles; the sensitivity of the actions is under strong efferent control2, 8. In the usually studied mammal, the cat, the receptor elements in the muscle spindles convey by two types of fibers (Groups I and II) muscle displacement and velocity information to the central nervous system. The func...
متن کاملSomatotopic organization of single primary afferent axon projections to cat spinal cord dorsal horn.
Horseradish peroxidase injection of identified low threshold cutaneous mechanoreceptor (LTCM) primary afferent axons was used to assess the somatotopic organization of hindlimb projections to laminae III and IV of cat dorsal horn. Multiple injections in the same animals were used to assess bilateral symmetry and precision. Thirty-one axons were injected, with more than 1 axon injected in each o...

متن کاملStochastic resonance in the motor system: effects of noise on the monosynaptic reflex pathway of the cat spinal cord.
In sensory systems, the presence of a particular nonzero level of noise may significantly enhance the ability of an individual to detect weak sensory stimuli through a phenomenon known as stochastic resonance (SR). The aim of this study was to demonstrate if such phenomenon is also exhibited by the motor system; in particular, in the Ia-motoneuron synapse of the cat spinal cord. Monosynaptic re...
